The MIT Blackjack Team is the most infamous team of individuals that were able to beat the casinos at the game of blackjack. The team was comprised of students from the top US universities including Harvard University, Harvard Business School, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. These individuals were highly intelligent and used every technique available to beat the house using multiple blackjack tables.
The team began, initially, as just a group of individuals attending a course at MIT on “How to Gamble, If you Must.” There they learned the basic methods that could be used to count cards while playing blackjack. This team went on to utilize several different techniques to win massive amounts of money. For example, card counting, hole-carding, shuffle tracking, and silent signals amongst the team members, were some of the other techniques they utilized to win.
During the spring of 1979, The MIT Blackjack Team went on their first trip, which was to the casinos of Atlantic City. They didn’t fare well with their first endeavor, and the team ended up losing all of their capital. Following that trip most of the team went on to graduate and took on regular jobs. However, two of players stuck with blackjack and honed their techniques. Once they had a better handle on things they began recruiting new team members as well as investors.
In the same way that they started, the two remaining players put on the same “How to Gamble..,” course and recruited individuals that were truly interested. The new team started off with only a few members and 00 in capital to gamble with. This time was different though, as they were able to make small profits right from the start. They were by no means in big leagues, at least not yet. At this point even the new team was debating whether or not this idea was going to work.
The team was introduced to Bill Kaplan, in 1980, who at the time was a very successful blackjack player himself. In fact, he already had experience running his own blackjack team in Vegas. Bill spent a little bit of his time watching the team and ultimately decided that he would take part as long as it would be run like a business.
The team was now ready. They formed what they called “the bank,” which was the collection of funds from different investors as well as the players. They very quickly had thousand dollars in capital to begin playing blackjack. Within two months’ time, the team was able to double the initial investment. They were averaging 0 dollars per hour at the tables, proof that the system was working. It was incredible.
In 1993 the team lost its investment backing and the remaining funds were distributed among the players and investors accordingly. The major players had pretty much been banned from every casino in the world, forcing many of them to find other financial avenues. The team basically split up and some fell into real estate while some joined other teams with already established banks.
The MIT Blackjack Team ran strong for decades. Though the original team is no longer operating, one might bet that there are similar teams out there making a decent amount at the blackjack tables.
